I think that Baba is distant from Amir becuase they differ so much in their daily lifestyles.

Jenna F said...

Do you think that Baba's name has any connection to the insult Babalu meaning boogeyman?

TylerF said...

I think that that is a reason there is distance between the two, but I also think it also has a lot to do with Amir’s personality.

jake a. said...

i donth think this is part of the problem too much i think its just he is dissapointed that he didnt turn out like baba did

Keiko A said...

I agree with Chad because when they are together they don't seem to have the same father-son bond that some people have.

Travisg said...

i think that baba is distant from his son because his son killed his wife but he also lost his mom so he shouldn't get blamed for something he had no control over!

Erin said...

hey kayla and jordan,

I think that Amir is distant from Baba because he wants Amir to be more like him. But the death of his mother in child birth probably does play a little part in why they are so distant too.

chadf said...

I think that Baba is a name that has a lot of respect towards one's father.

amandab said...

I don't think that Baba is mad at Amir for his wife dying, I just think that Amir feels that's why his dad hates him but it's really Amir who is blaming himself.

KaylaL said...

I think that Baba and Amir are distant because Amir isn't interested in the stuff that Baba is interested in. Amir thinks that it's his fault that his mother died, he feels like his dad hates him for that.

Shelby M. said...

Baba and Amir arent close because amir is so different and Baba just wants him to be like everyone else.

BrookeG said...

Kelli asked if Amir was right in thinking that Baba did not like him because his mother died while giving birth to him. Allison said that it is a probable reason, however Baba is most likely distant from Amir because they are so different, they don't have much in common at all.

Christine said...

I agree with jake. I think that Baba is just disapointed that Amir didn't turn out likeing sports instead he had been really involved in books and didn't really stand up for himself.

jake a. said...

baba is completely different in his daily life he is more lazy but in his younger lifetime he was more active in sports and activities than amir is

Tabitha M said...

I agree with Allison when she said that Baba could possibly still be mad at his wife’s death was Amir’s fault. Also because Amir is different from Baba when Baba was growing up. He feels like Amir isn’t his son.

chadf said...

Does anyone feel that Amir will have more power than Baba?

hilary l said...

I think that Amir is trying to gain his fathers respect but his father is hesitant about that because his wife was taken away from him when Amir was born. Amir thinks that his father thinks that he killed his mother and it was his fault that he took his mothers life away and Amir feels bad about that.

jenniferb said...

I think Baba does blame Amir for his mothers death because she she died giving birth to him. Also Amir is very different from Baba.

TylerF said...

Stealing, I think when Baba and Amir have this talk it is because Baba feel his son was not only robbed of a mom, but he was robbed of his princess and he still holds a great bitterness from it all.

TraciAnn said...

To answer the first question of the fishbowl, i think that this is not the reason for the distance in the father-son relationship of Amir and Baba. Baba is distant from Amir because he is not as athletic as he would want him to be. He hoped his son would be more like himself. This may make Baba feel ashamed so he blames Amir for his wifes death.

Erin said...

Jenna, I don't think that his name resembles the Boogeyman, but I really don't know why the author would word them so close.

Maria A. said...

Going to Jenna's question on Baba's name, I think it does have some sort of insult to the word Babalu meaning boogeyman because since many terrible things happen in this book and people being mean to other people, Baba has some little thing to do with that and probably later in the book something big will happen involving Baba and refering him relating to the boogeyman maybe has something to do later on.

amandab said...

I think that Amir was just trying to get attention from his dad beause Baba was paying more attention to Hassan.

JordanR said...

I agree with amanda and travis. Amir had no control over his mother's death, and i would call it murderer. There just isn't a father son connection between them but i think thats baba's fault.

Jenna F said...

I believe that Baba is distant from Amir because they really have nothing in common. When Baba said "If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he was my son,", emphasizes the point that Amir seems like a stranger to his father.

Keiko A said...

I also agree that Baba is mad at Amir because his wife died as he was born, but I think that he is just looking for someone to blame.

chadf said...

Is there going to be tension between Amir and Hassan due to the way the Baba treats them both?

Tabitha M said...

Amir is so desperate for Baba’s attention, because maybe since he doesn’t have a mom he needs an adult in his life that will love him no matter what. Amir is jealous when his father does something with someone else probably because he is scared his dad will leave him or that his father likes that person more then him.

Shelby M. said...

Baba was paying more attention to Hassan and it would be hard to grow up with a father that really has nothing to do with you. Hes jealous of what Hassan and his dad have.

Maria A. said...

I agree with Jenniferb on Baba blaming Amir on his mother's death and referring to the first comment chad made, it does seem like Baba is far from Amir in the way they act towards eachother and not much love between them.

TraciAnn said...

Amir wants more then anything to be accepted by his father. This makes him desperate for attention. I agree with Alison that he is in serch for love and just wants to be loved by his father because he is missing his mother.

Kristin L said...

Outer circle--good comments so far, but feel free to break away from what the inner circle is discussing and to follow your own questions and interests. Also, take your time in your responses and explain your thoughts...you could even bring in a quote here and there if you wanted to make me a happy teacher!

BrookeG said...

I think that Amir is so desperate for attention from his father because he wants approval. He wants to be the favorite. His father is so hard to please, so Amir just persists. Amir just wants his fathers love. And like Allison pointed out, when you're a child, approval and love and acceptance is so important.

jenniferb said...

I think there is some connection with Baba’s name to the boogeyman because many people don’t like Baba and a way to insult him was to give him a nickname.

hilary l said...

Amir does not get much attention from his father and he is desperate for that. He wants his father to put all of his attention in him even when his father treats Hassan the same as him. He wants to be treated differently than Hassan and set apart from him because he is the son and Hassan is the servant. He thinks they shouldn’t always be treated the same.

hilary l said...

Christine said...

Chad,
I don't thinnk that Amir will end up haveing more power than Baba just because Baba has so much respect all ready but then Amir is very smart. though at the beginning of the book Amir starts out living in a different country so... i don't really know.

KaylaL said...

Amir seems to be saying or doing anything to get Baba's attention, "I think I have saratan" (page 14). Amir just wants to be apporved by Baba. Baba doesn't show his affection very well, Amir wishes he did.

jake a. said...

i dont really think baba knows how to father his son like he gets him whatever he wants and he doesnt punish him if he gets in trouble

JordanR said...

i think another reason why Baba is distant from Amir is because when Amir was born he lost something that was very important to him so maybe he felt like Amir didn't make up for his wife being gone.

Travisg said...

Travisg said...

I don't know but it almost seems like amir and baba are from different familys? I think that Amir was looking for his fathers love but every time he goes to his dad just seem's to push him away. He would rather do something nice for other kids then fix his relationshiop with his own son!

Keiko A said...

For Jenna's question; I think that the author may have made those names so close because later on he might display some actions in which he seems like "Babalu"

TylerF said...

Chad,
I think that there already is a tension between Hassan and Amir, it just isn’t an overt, out there tension. But Amir does see Baba’s favoritism, and I think it secretly really bother’s him. Who wouldn’t be bothered by it, Baba likes Hassan more then his own kid.

TraciAnn said...

Amir doesn't admit to being friends with Hassan because he doesn't want to be seen with someone different. All of the bullies pick on Hassan and Amir doesn't want to be pulled into the fights.

amandab said...

Amir doesn't want to address Hassan as his friend in public because everyone judges him for being with a "Hazara".

chadf said...

Jen the book never says that the town doesnt like him. On page two near the bottom it says "Everyone agreed that my father, my Baba, had built the most beautiful house..." Saying that the town respects what he has done.

Tabitha M said...

Amir seems like the person that wants everyone to like him. He doesn’t stand up for himself by being proud of what he believes in. He ignores Hassan, because he doesn’t want anyone being mad at him for being Hassan’s friend.

Christine said...

Jenna,
The kids were calling ALI Babula not Baba. So there really is no connection with the names. It's just Coincidence.

hilary l said...

I think that something very bad is going to happen to Hassan. I feel like he is going to loose someone of something that is very important to him. He is either going to hurt himself or loose someone he loves.

BrookeG said...

In the end of the chapter it mention something about Hassan stops smiling. I think that something is going to happen with Amir. Like Hassan always stands up for Amir, but Amir never stands up for Hassan and won't even admit to being his friend.

Keiko A said...

I think that there could be tension with the way that Baba treats the two kids because one of them could get jealous of the other and start to break away from them.

Travisg said...

Chad that just shows that Baba is looking for everyone but his family to like him. he should look for his family to respect him but he looks to people that shouldn't matter instead.

Maria A. said...

Going ack to what brooke said, I also think Amir is thirsty for attention from his father. When you are loved and on the goodside by your father, it is a good thing to have at least one of your parents trust so you can have more independance. Getting more attention from his father is a good thing because I think he needs it.

jenniferb said...

I think Hassan has been the most mistreated because since he is the servant and doesn’t have an education people make fun of him for that. And many people feel as if they are better then him, therefore they have the right to rule over him.

amandab said...

I think Hassan is the most mistreated character because of how Amir treats him and how he always gets shut down because of his religion.

BrookeG said...

I think that Hassan is the most mistreated character in the book so far, in that he is taken for granted by Amir. The fact that Hassan works for Amir, makes Amir look down on him. They are friends when nobody is around, but Amir always chooses others before Hassan.

Christine said...

What predictions do you guys have on why Amir had said that Hassan had never smiled again? What do you think will happen next?

TraciAnn said...

Who is the most mistreated character in the book?
I think that more then Hassan, Ali is treated the worst. Even thought Hassan gets picked on a lot Ali gets picked on for even more. Ali is picked on for his limp and his motionless face and his looks. Everyone stares at him on the streets and the public yells rude remarks at him constantly. Hassan gets his strength from his father.

TylerF said...

I agree with everything Tabitha said, I think that Amir is just scared of being any more hated, and fears not being accepted. And that fear is what keeps Amir from taking a lot of the opportunities he has been given, even just standing up for himself or Hassan.

Tabitha M said...

Hassan is the most completely mistreated person in the book so far. Hassan gives his all in everything he does, and his best friend denies him. He can’t read or write so he is open to any education he can get, even if it involves Amir being mean to him. Hassan I think is thankful to be alive and probably lives thinking “It could be worse.”

Jenna F said...

When Amir is describing his father, he says, "You can't love a person who lives that way withou fearing him too. Maybe even hating him a little." I believe this helps add to the Babalu-Baba connection. A boogeyman is feared just as, even though it may be small, Amir fears his father.

Travisg said...

its like Amir wants Hassan to feel lucky that he is friends with amir when they both should feel lucky to have friends because i know i wouldn't be friends with someone that constintly thinks there so much better then me.

JordanR said...

I think that the way Baba treats each of this kids is eventually going to cause a fight between Hassan and Amir. But i wonder if Hassan will fight back or if it will be Amir who is fighting.

BrookeG said...

Hassan always seems so upbeat and optimistic and happy. I think he appears this way because he puts up a front. I think that he is content with his life, he doesn't expect things to get better. But I think that sometimes it does get to him that his life will always be the same, he just pretends everything is great. We really don't know how he is feeling.

hilary l said...

I think that Hassan has been treated the worse out of all of the characters so far. His father, Ali, is also treated very badly because of what ethnic group they are and they look differently than everyone else.

Erin said...

I think Amir does't want to be friends with Hassan in public, because he wants to be accepted by all of the other kids in the neighborhood and he see's how they all act around Ali calling him a "float-nose, mouse-eating, load-carrying donkey."

Amir just seems like he wants everyone to like him and if he is hanging out with a Hazara...

Keiko A said...

I think that Hassan is the most mistreated character in the book because people are always making fun of his appearence and his religion, even his mother made fun of him.

amandab said...

I think he's so happy because he is greatful for what he has and that he has good people in his life.

Maria A. said...

Answering Christines question, Saying that Hassan will never smile again in an exageration way, it is giving you a heads up on that something bad will happen soon

jake a. said...

i think amir is more jealous of how his dad reacts towards hassan and how his dada treats hassan. amir every time he sees something between hassan and baba he gets this rush of wondering why his dad associates with hassan so much and why he doesnt with associate with himself as much

Christine said...

Hassan is definitely the worst treated of all the characters in the book. He is always being stepped on by Amir. He is never mentioned to be a freind to Amir even though he seems like he would be the best freind possible to him.

KaylaL said...

Amir wants to put himself above Hassan, he doesn't want Hassan to think that he is better than Amir. "I read him poems and stories, sometimes riddles - though I stopped reading those when I saw he was far better at solving them than I was" (page 28), Amir knows that he is in a higher class than Hassan and he knows that he has more education. He doesn't want Hassan thinking that he knows something more that Amir does, Amir wants to make himself feel better. Amir also doesn't want to share Baba's attention with Hassan. He wants him all for himself.

jenniferb said...

Chad, that is true, but I think many people are jealous of Baba because he is very successful even though they respect him.

Maria A. said...

Do you think that in the rape scene in chapter 7, was it used for a scare factor or for a future purpose?

BrookeG said...

I do think that Hassan knows that Amir knows about the rape, because if Amir didn't know about it things wouldn't have gotten weird with them, they would still be friends like they always were.

BrookeG said...

I do think that Hassan knows that Amir knows about the rape, because if Amir didn't know about it things wouldn't have gotten weird with them, they would still be friends like they always were.

Christine said...

I think Hassan has an idea that that Amir saw hat happened but he doesn't want to say anything. Because he did start to say something when they met up after it all happened but he didn't say it. What do you think he was trying to say?

Whitney C said...

I think Hassan might think that Amir knows because Amir was all awkward once he found Hassan walking back with the kite. Also Hassan might have seen him when he was beign raped

Bandido said...

Hassan totally does know, he can just tell when someone is being a d-bag and that person is Amir.

allie f. said...

I do think that Hassan knows that Amir knows about his rape because in the book Amir said he caught a glimpse of his face, so he could of possibly saw him.

amandab said...

I do think that Hassan knows about his rape because they both knew that something was wrong and that something did happen, and after the rape everything between them was different because they both knew what Amir did. Also Hassan could tell by the way Amir was snapping at him and how rude he was, he could see the guilt.

hilary l said...

I think that Hassan knows that Amir knows about his rape because their was an awkwardness between them. I think that after the rape Amir would have said something about Hassan bleeding but he didn’t which means Amir saw it.

toreinm said...

I Think Hassan Knows Amir Saw Because It Does Get Really Awkward Between Them, And There Shouldn't Really Be Anything Else Causeing That.

jenniferb said...

I think Hassan knows Amir saw him getting raped because it awkward after they saw each other. It also seems that Hassan knows what Amir is thinking all of the time.

Shelby M. said...

I think that Hassan knew that Amir was watching because he is acting weird around him.

BrookeG said...

I think that Hassan doesn't react when Amir throws the fruit at him because he is so hurt. His best friend is turning on him, and he has no idea why. They were closer than brothers for years, and he cares about Amir so much. He doesn't know what to do.

KaylaL said...

Yes I do think that Hassan knew that Amir watched him get raped. Hassan just didn't want to say anything because he didn't want to talk about it. I think Hassan didn't react to Amir throwing things at him because he is just a relaxed, laid back person. I think Amir should have explained why he was throwing stuff at him. Amir should have explained that Hassan needs to defend himself.

TraciAnn said...

No i don't think that Hassan knows that Amir watched it because he didn't talk to Amir about what happened. If Hassan knew Amir saw the rape he would have probably would have stuck up for himself and gotten mad at Amir.

amandab said...

Bandido said...

The rape scene in the book was a completely rude attempt to get people to buy the book. When a person reads they'll be freaking out and telling all their friends, then those friends will go and check the book out. That passage of the book is pointless and I think we should all go Fahrenheit 451 on this book.

Christine said...

What do yout think Hassan was trying to say after the rape to Amir? Why do you think he didn't say anything?

Keiko A said...

I think that Hassan didn't react to the pamagranites because he is still loyal to Amir and even after all the things that have happened to him because of his loyalty.

Keiko A said...

toreinm said...

I Kind Of Agree With Jason. Only Cause He Really Did Go Way To In Depth On The Rape Scene And The Awkwardness That Ensued It.

Shelby M. said...

I think the reason Hassan didnt react when Amir was throwing friut is because he is hurt by what happened and doesnt really know what to do.

hilary l said...

I wish that Amir would have just confronted Hassan about that rape because if he did than Hassan wouldn’t have suffered with keeping that secrete. I also think that if Amir would have talked to Hassan about it than Hassan would have still thought of Amir as a good friend instead of just being his servant.

amandab said...

I think Hassan didn't throw them back because he didn't want to hurt Amir because he didn't feel like he had too. Amir craved for the punishment and Hassan didn't want to punish him back. It just shows Hassan's loyalty to Amir and that he would never hurt Amir like Amir would hurt him.

Whitney C said...

I feel like Amir wants to test Hassan when he threw the grapefruit. I feel like Hassan also wants to show Amir what he's doing isn't right. I feel like Hassan does what he does becuase he knows it will impact Amir more than hitting him back.

JordanR said...

I think that Hassan might know that Amir knows. First because of how Hassan acted when he talked to Amir after the rape, Amir didn't even ask any questions about what happened, or why Hassan was so upset. Second because of the reference Allison use on page 76 "he moved his head slightly and i caught a glimpse of his face" eventhough Amir said that Hassan and him could have had eye contact at some point.

Bandido said...

Pomegranate is a symbol for the guilt Amir has. He throws it back at Hassan instead of making things better until Hassan breaks that symbolic pomegranate on himself. Or at least that's what the Sparknotes told me.

allie f. said...

If I was in the place of Hassan I would really want to talk to Amir about the rape because if I was in that situation I would really want to talk to someone about my problem.

Jenna F said...

On page 76, Amir says, " -I caught a glimpse of his face. Saw the resignation in it. It was a look I had seen before. It was the look of the lamb." Do you think the resignation was for the act that was about to be done to him or was it Hassan's resignation that Amir was not going to step in?

toreinm said...

I Think With The Grape Fruits, Amir Is Trying To Get Hassan To Fight Back. If Hassan Fights Back, He'll Feel Less Guilty About Letting Him Get Raped.

Erin said...

I do think that Hassan knows that Amir watched him get raped because there is a huge awkwardness in their relationship after they got back together.

Also, I think that the forshadowing from the earlier chapters when Amir says "that was the summer Hassan stopped smiling" is for how Amir and Hassan's relationship weakened over that summer. One reason he stopped smiling is because Amir never stood up for Hassan.

BrookeG said...

If i was in Hassan's position, I would probably not want to be friends with Amir. I would need a friend who was there for me, and Amir was not there for Hassan during the hardest time in his life.

TraciAnn said...

this is chelsea chapman...
i think that Hassan does know that Amir saw something because it says that Hassan was about to say something about what happened in the alley way and then took a step back and didn't. I think that Hassan just didnt want to talk about it because he was so embarrassed and didnt want his best friend to think about him differently. Also i think he didnt say anything because he was ashammed of Amir not standing up for him so i don't think he really wanted to get into it with someone who didnt stand up for him.

Whitney C said...

I would not want be friends with Amir by choice but because Hassan has no other friends then I would be friends but not technically be a true friend to him. Amir is a jerk and I'm not a big fan of him.

Maria A. said...

For commenting in for the inner circle, I agree with Tabitha on Hassan being scared because of what he does to Amir. I think Hassan has more power of Amir just from the rape scene in chapter 7 and other events with him just pushing Amir around but I think something will come back to Hassan in a bad way for what he does to other people. Also, I agree with Nathen with being friends with Amir because he would need a time with need from what has happening to him and he would need someone if no one else is there, but if I was Hassan tryig to be friends with Amir, there would not be such a close relationship, more of a distance one.

toreinm said...

In Reference To Jenna's Comment, I Think That He Saw Amir. I Think That's Why He Let Them Do It. He Was Tired Of Fighting, And Even His Friend Wasn't Going To Help Him.

amandab said...

I would not blame Amir at all, I would try to understand how he felt and hear his feelings and want to know what he felt. I would not judge him and not be friends with him, everyone deserves a second chance.

Christine said...

If I was Hassan i wouldn't want AMir as a friend but then he is pretty much Hassan's only friend. I think in a way Amir needs Hassan more than Hassan needs him.

Keiko A said...

If I was put in the same place as Hassan I definately wouldn't want to be friends with Amir because I would know that he wouldn't be there for me when I needed it most. Plus it seems like Amir really doesn't care about Hassan, he only plays with him when he has nothing better to do.

jenniferb said...

Hassan is not a violent guy. He would never hurt Amir even if Amir hurts him. Hassan will also hurt himself in order to save Amir or to satisfy him. On page 93 Hassan picks up the pomegranate and hits himself with it. "'There,' he croaked, red dripping down his face like blood. 'Are you satisfied? Do you feel better?'" I think Hassan now lives in fear because his best friend hit him with pomegranates.

BrookeG said...

Allison pointed out that Amir needs Hassan, more then Hassan needs Amir. Hassan is a stronger person than Amir is, he loves Amir and cares about him like a brother, but he is also okay on his own. Amir depends on Hassan for everything.

Shelby M. said...

If I was Hassan I wouldnt want to talk to Amir about the rape at first because it is a very private thing. And because Amir wasnt really part of it he wasbt there for him.

allie f. said...

I disagree with Allison saying that Hassan doesnt really need Amir because in a way I think that they both need each other in a certain way.

Torein, I am glad you agree with me, lets go and burn this book 451 style. Bring the mechanical dogs. I'll be there, I just gotta finish watching my shows.

Whitney C said...

Amir needs Hassan, Hassan doesn't need Amir...

TraciAnn said...

If i was in the same place as Hassan i would like to be friends with Amir. Like what Nathan said Amir and Hassan had been friends forever and know that Amir would be there for him. I agree with Alison when she said that Amir needs Hassan more then Hassan needs Amir. Hassan is the strongest of the two and he has a lot of wisdom to embark upon Amir. Hassan doesn't need him.

Jenna F said...

I disagree with Torin. Hosseini didn't go into a lot of detail. It could have been worse. Much, much worse. I also disagree with Jason. Hosseini didn't put that passage about Hassan being raped in the book just to get more people to read it. I believe he did it to add to the story, to add the aspect of two boys losing their innocence through a single act, affecting them in different ways.

hilary l said...

I don’t know how I would be able to react to something like this. If I were Hassan and I knew that Amir saw what had happened but didn’t stand up for me, I would not be able to stay committed to being friends with Amir. Hassan always stands up for Amir even when Amir would not stand up for Hassan when he was being raped, but because Hassan loves Amir so much, he stays committed to Amir and doesn’t stop serving him and standing up for him.

Erin said...

If I was Hassan, I would still want to be friends with Amir, but I would talk about the problems in our relationship.

Loosing a friend that you have had since you were a baby is not worth loosing a friend like Assef and those boys that follow him around.

KaylaL said...

To answer Maria's question...
I think that the author put that scene in there to show the changing factor in Hassan and Amir's lives. This scene changed Hassan's life, it made him a secluded person because he was scared. It changed Amir's life because his character starts to show his true colors. This scene was for future purposes, to make the characters more developed.

TraciAnn said...

this is chelsea
i agree with torein..i think that Amir is really trying to have Hassan stand up for himelf and make it so that the rape incident will not happen again and so that Amir will not have to feel as guilty about not sticking up for Hassan during the rape.

toreinm said...

I Think Amir Needs Hassan Much More Than Hassan Needs Amir. Hassan Can Be Happy In Any Situation, And Can Really Befriend Probably A Lot More People Than Amir. I Think Amir Needs Hassan Though Because Hassan Is Always Helping Him, Though He Never Helps Hassan.

Keiko A said...

I agree with what the inner circle is saying about Amir being insecure because he is always trying to make fun of him for not being as smart as he is, and he needs to feel like a superior to Hassan.

Whitney C said...

The kite compition may have brought out a temporary affection from Baba. That affection will ware off soon.

BrookeG said...

I definitely agree with Chelsea in that Hassan was ashamed that Amir didn't stand up for him, so that is a factor in why Hassan doesn't talk about it. Hassan was deeply hurt that his "friend" didn't help him when he needed it the most.

toreinm said...

I Think His Dad Was Definitely Searching For A Reason To Love His Son And The Kite COmpetition Was That. Amir Finally Made His Dad Proud And Now His Dad Is Willing To EXPRESS The Love He's Always Felt.

JordanR said...

If i was Hassan i'm not sure if i would be friends with Amir. It kind of seems like they're friendship was forced. JUST because they grew up together, they're friends. Amir doesn't respect Hassan at all but yet Hassan looks up to Amir. But i think that Amir should look up to Hassan cause like Allison said Hassan is so much stronger than Amir because he's been through so much, and he could learn a lot from him. I think if Hassan were to stand up to Amir, maybe Amir will see that Hassan has a voice and isn't afraid of him.

Jenna F said...

In regards to Jennifer's comment, I do not think that Hassan is afraid of Amir. I think he is more embrassed than anything. Being raped does that to a victim.

jenniferb said...

I think Hassan is fine being on his own. He does not need Amir's friendship as much as Amir needs it. Even though Amir does not realize it, he needs Hassan more then he thinks. Hassan stood up for Amir when Assef bullied him around. Amir is scared to fight Assef when Hassan will stand up for his best friend. Amir does not appreciate the friendship he has with Hassan.

Maria A. said...

I agree with Jennifer on Hassan living in fear from the pomagrants getting thrown at him by his best friend. With the red dripping down his face, makes me picture of hiding his fear behind him and trying to just let it go when soon it will bubble up and blow soon, showing that he is the weak one, eventhough he had a strong mind about things before.

Bandido said...

If I was Hassan I would say, "Hey dude, here's your kite you mean person. Now go bury your guilt in books and maybe later, bourban." Then I would walk away, not looking back, but knowing Amir might feel even more obligated to say something later on and try to patch up our friendship. This is when the credits start rolling to the music of some generic pop band.

hilary l said...

Getting the kite had an advantage for Amir because he gained more respect from his father. But this respect does not last forever and because of Amir's selfishness, he lost the best friend anyone could have. Also, because Amir did not do anything for Hassan a guilt builds up inside him and he feels terrible about what he did all the time.

I Think The Insecurity Is Evoking An Arrogant Type Appearance. He Seems Arrogant Because He's Trying To Cover Up How Insecure He Is. Maybe He Can't Read That Well, So That's Why He Makes Fun Of Hassan For Not Being Able To.

The kite competition helped Amir and his fathers relationship but at the same time it forced the relationship to turn for the worst. Baba was proud of Amir but this wouldn't make Baba love Amir. Baba wants to be a better father and tries to be supportive but it is hard when he expects so much more of him.

amandab said...

I think that Amir was way to scared to say what happened, because he didn't want to get in trouble like Tabitha said. He doesn't want to be exposed as a coward after he just became something to his dad. He doesn't want to let everyone know that he did a very bad thing and that he doesn't really know what caring for someone is or standing up for someone.

Amir is ashamed of himself that he didn't help Hassan when he was getting raped and because he was so ashamed he cannot find the courage to tell somone about it

I Wouldn't Have Let Hassan Get Raped In The Ally. I Would Step In, And If I Actually Didn't Do Anything, I Would Find Someone Else To Help Them. There Are Lots Of People, SOmeone Would Be Willing To Stop Him.

If i was Amir I dont think i would have let Hassan get raped but like kelly said it all depends on who you are. But you cant really put yourself in that situation because thats a really hard situation. even though Hassan has sacrificed so much for Amir i still think that you cant really put yourself in that situation.

Whitney C said...

I would have liked to step in but I'm not so sure if I would have the guts to step in. Somehow I feel like I would stand up for Hassan and stop him from getting raped but I am sure I would hesitate a bit. It would not be easy to go in stand up for him.

allison said that Hassan needs Amir more than Amir needs Hassan and i totally agree i feel like Hassan is really trying to keep his long term friendship going and Amir really doesnt care. I think that Amir is kind of selfish and is just worried about what will happen to him if he steps in. If i were Amir i truely would step in and stick up for Hassan. Especially since they have been friends since a long time ago i know that i would step in and gladly say something because that is not right and i wouldnt care what would happen to me.

In regards to the inner circle, if I was Amir, as in every aspect of him, I would not have moved. If I was me I would have stopped it, or at least gotten help. Amir was afraid. Not only of Assef and being beaten up but of already losing what he didn't have, the affection of Baba. The kite, that Hassan had, was the key to what Amir truly wished for.

JordanR said...

If i was Amir i would have never let Hassan get raped. I understand that maybe at that time Amir would have been scared and didn't really know what to do but if something like that happened to someone close to you, and you truly cared about them, you should stand up for them and make sure they wouldn't get hurt like that again.

What do the kites really stand for?... Are they for representing different feelings with the different colors, or does it show danger for an event to come later on, because other people fight to get the kite?

amandab said...

I would definitely stop the rape, I could never stand to see someone get hurt especially if they are my best friend. I would gladly put myself in danger for someone else's safety. If you are a true friend you stand up for them because that's what good friends do.

If I were in Amir's position I do not know what I would do for Hassan if I saw him getting raped. I do know that I would not be able to keep it in and I would tell someone. If I saw Hassan getting raped I don't think I would be able to step in and stop them but I would go get someone that is stronger to help.

Keiko A said...

If I was in Amirs place I would have defened Hassan when he was being raped because he had always been there for Amir and the reason that he was being raped was so he could keep the blue kite for Amir, so he is the main reason that Hassan was even put in that position.

I agree with Tori becuase there were people around and if he didn't want to get hurt then he could have gone for help from someone else. If he would have done that then maybe the rape wouldn't have happened.

For Chad's question,

of course everyone is going to say that they would not let Hassan get raped, but in reality, most people would not actually do it if they were in his place.

everyone that has said anyhting about this question so far has contradicted themself.
Rachel said, "Ya I would do it, oh actually I dont know if I could, But I would try, and wait I wouldn't want the after effect."
(not picking on her or anything) but I don't think very many people would actually do something.

Whitney C said...

I feel like that if I stepped in for Hassan then maybe Baba would have been proud of me because I did something right and protected my friend rather than back down and run away. I think Baba would have wanted Amir to step in and stand up for Hassan and not to run away.

I would not be able to live with myself knowing that I did not stand up for my friend if i saw them get raped.

I Would Rather My Parents Be Proud Of Me For Something I Did. I Mean, I Think I Definitely Wouldn't Let Hassan Get Raped, Even If It Was THe Only Way To Get My Parents Approval. If I've Managed To Go That Long Without Having His Approval, I'd Stsop Wanting It. I Think Baba Would Probably Feel More Proud Of Amir For Not Letting Hassan Get Raped As Opposed To Getting The Last Kite.

If I had to choose between standing up for my friends and getting my parents approval, then I would stand up for my friends because my friends are important to me and if that disappoints my parents then they could deal with it because there is always a chance to lose a friend, but you can't get away from your family. So even if they threw me out they are stuck with me, so sucks for them.

I agree with Mackenzie. In most cases our minds go with what we believe is the most accepted answer, in this case stepping in. But in reality, our true actions would most likely be that of not taking action and doing just as Amir did. We would run. I include myself in this.

If I saw Hassan getting raped in the alley now I would walk over and eventually get charged for manslaughter, but if I were Amir's age and saw that I would probably freak out and get out of there.
That's some scary stuff and these kids are twelve or something.
But hopefully I'll never see this and never live in Texas and/or in the movie Deliverance.

I would have defended Hassan, especailly since he's my best friend. I would want to defend him. It would take a lot of courage to stand up to Assef but if you're helping you're best friend it would be worth it. Hassan as done so much for Amir and Amir has done nothing for Hassan. Amir needs to do something for Hassan. "I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan - the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past - and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run (page 77)", Amir realizes that Hassan has stood up for him many times but he still doesn't want to defend him. Amir has to live with what he has done.

amandab said...

I would much rather stand up for my friend any day then get approval of my parents. Parents are supposed to already love their kids and be there for them, and if they aren't then they aren't a good parent. Parental approval is nothing compared saving your best friend. I would stand up for my friend hands down.

The inner circle is talking about winning points and getting a more important approval, and I think that's wrong, it shouldn't be about getting points with your parents it should be about helping someone, not becoming the hero.

Bandido said...

I agree with Keiko, approval from peers is way more important than family approval.

I agree with what Whitney said with if Amir stood up for Hassan than his father, Baba, would be more proud of Amir for doing that

I would stand up for my friends rather than living with the scene of watching a friend being raped. Even though it may be hard to stand up to someone, I would because my friendship with someone is very valuable. Amir does not feel the same way, he would rather live with that guilt of knowing what happened to his best friend, instead of standing up for Hassan. And if he did stand up for Hassan than his friendship with him would be much stronger. Also, Baba would be more proud of Amir for helping a friend out than coming back with the blue kite.

Mackenzie is right about how most people would not step in but there are a few who would actually step in

I think that Amir feels that he has to sacrifice Hassan to get Babas approval because he wants his dads attention so bad hes willing to do anything to get it. If he would have just helped Hassan Baba would have been more proud of him and he would have won both of them over. But instead he made on wrong decision and is going to end up losing all them. I also think that i all depends onthe relationship that you have with your parents vs your friends so i think it depends ont he person and life style ytou live

If Baba found out that Amir stood up for Hassan he would be more proud then if the kite was brought back. In the beginning of the book Baba said how he was dissapointed in his son and how he wasn't standing up for myself. He would have been proud his son fought back and wasn't a coward to run away.

I think that I agree with Chad that Amir and Baba are so different because their personalities are just different, however I also think that their relationship suffers because Baba favors Hassan a lot more it seems like. I think that Amir and Baba are a lot alike, which makes Baba not want to be around Amir because he reminds him of himself. Also I agree with Traci in that if I was Amir I don't think that I could ever live with myself after what I saw happen to Hassan. I don't think that I would have the courage that Amir has to go on in life, even though he is a coward, I can't imagine what it must have been like to live with Hassan as a constant reminder after what happened.
